emergency tunnel to walk out. one pregnant woman was take ton the hospital as a precaution. bob turk is following the conditions but we will begin with megan corkel. >> reporter: city officials have now extended a state of emergency for another week as the heat continues to bare down on our region. >> reporter: the blazing hot sun taking its toll. >> incredibly hot. >> i have no energy to do this i thinks. >> reporter: the mercury turning deadly. >> these temperatures are dangerous and it's nothing to take lightly. >> reporter: nine heat related deaths now reported in maryland, five in baltimore city, two in montgomery county, and friday a new gas reported in baltimore county. >> it's somebody's family member and you know that's why we tell people to prepare and we tell people to check on each other. >> reporter: that's just what the city is doing, volunteers going door to door in powerless

neighborhoods. another emergency command center now set up at the northern community action center. the african american festival set to begin on saturday, forecasted to be the hottest day of the week. now organizers are taking added precautions. >> i don't think it's ever been this hot for this event. >> reporter: special air- conditioned tents have been brought in. >> we have missing tents throughout the festival and the mta is bringing in cooling buses. >> reporter: with more than half a million people expected, extra ems units will be on scene and roaming the clouds to keep an eye out for anyone who might be overheating. >> reporter: workers setting up for the big event know just how hot it is. >> it's draws the heat out, makes it hotter. >> reporter: on a near triple heat day that's the last thing you need. dozens of city volunteers will hit the streets again tomorrow to bring ice and emergency supplies to those who are still without power. reporting live, megan mccorkel.

>> megan, thank you. our complete weather coverage continues now with bob turk. he has a look at why the worse is yet to come, bob. >> reporter: looks like tomorrow will be the absolute worse day we've had in the last 10 days. temperatures or heat index. that's why tomorrow all afternoon into the evening hours, there will be an excessive heat warning. not a watch. this is a warning for most of the extreme southern portions of the eastern shores will be under a watch. the only county that's not getting into this is garrett county and western allegheny county will not get that hot. here's the way the weekend is shaping up. temperatures in the low 100s expected tomorrow. yeah. today we got up to 99 with a heat index of 101. tomorrow may get up to 103. that will break the record which is 101. heat index tomorrow afternoon may get to 110 on sunday. a little better, maybe some upper 90s with the heat index around 100. some thunderstorms likely. that will cool things down, and all next week much cooler, yes

and even wetter weather headed our way, vic. complete forewarning weather coverage continues now with monique griego. >> bge told us the restoration process is taking so long because of damage like this throughout the area. and while crews are working nonstop, residents tell us it is really hard not to get frustrated. >> reporter: for the past week, bge and utility crews from across the country have been removing trees and repairing electrical lines. but despite an around the clock effort, dozens of customers are facing another weekend without service. >> it's just heat. no way to cool off. >> i can't store any food in there, i had to give the food away because there's no power. >> reporter: broax will likely pay more cash for the hotel

room rather than sit and bake in his home. >> it's wiping out my account. >> reporter: and while the utility has restored power to 97% of its customers nearly 11,000 are still waiting for repairs. >> we'll restoring people throughout the weekend. >> reporter: today we showed up to several neighborhoods just as crewed got the power going. >> when i saw the light i was like okay, thank god. i'm so glad. >> reporter: shirley tindel had never seen so happy to see her porch light on. she says she still can't stay here tonight. >> oh my gosh, my house is like a steam bath. >> reporter: despite the ongoing headaches, residents say they do appreciate the sacrifices these guys are maying. >> it's frustrating but i just thank god me and my family are okay. >> reporter: and while bge plans to work through the weekend they still can't give

an exact date for when all power will be restored. >> more than 11,000 customers are out. more than 5,000 still in the dark in the cities just over 4,000 in anne arundel county just over 1,000, howard county more than 500 customers still without power. last week's storm left nothing untouched including the bay bridge. tonight gigi barnett reports drivers are calling for changes to protect them in bad weather. >> it's dark, you're looking over the guardrail and you see 10-foot white caps and there's no place to go. >> reporter: adam charles thought he was going to die. he was driving eastbound on the bay bridge around 11:15 p.m. heading to a weekend of relaxation. just as he approach the top of the bridge, everything changed. >> it was like wrigley scott

couldn't have filmed a disaster bigger than this. >> reporter: a trailer dangled from the side of the bridge and a driver was seriously injured. charles says he and other drivers never received a warning about the dangerous ahead now they want better technology on the bridge. >> sound like all they have what i've been told is a little annanometer that spins around and telling them the weather. >> at 30 miles per hour we start putting up warnings and at 40 miles per hour we actually begin with restrictions on travel. >> reporter: the bay bridge does have an annamometer but no other technology to track winds. the state does not count on weather forecasts they change to frequently. the only plan of protection for drivers on the bridge during wicked weather are signs to warn them of the conditions.

>> shutting the bridge down prematurely also has implications and they are sometimes life safety implications with that. >> reporter: on monday it will begin an in depth review of what happened with last week's storms and how to improve its warning systems on the bridge. gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the maryland transportation association is looking at purchasing a wind measuring tool. but that will only track winds in the sky not the bridge. tell me exactly what happened? >> it's my son, i think he smoked some pcp. he swears somebody is after him. >> does he have weapons?

>> he has a weapon. >> who's shot? what? >> he's giving up now. >> police caught up with 21- year-old andre mccroy on route one. he managed to get into a cruiser and took off. police shot mccroy several times. tonight he remains in custody. a neighborhood watch captain charged with killing an unarmed teenager is out on bond again. his initial $150,000 bond was revoked after he and his wife lied about their finances. zimmerman has to stay in florida and must check in with authorities every 48 hours. a weak jobs report sent jobs tumbling more than 100 points today. the unemployment rate remains unchanged at 8.2%. the struggling job market is

in the chain reaction crash. two people suffered serious injuries. a preliminary report blame it is driver of the van for not paying attention and failing to control his vehicle's speed. shocking videos placedded on a facebook page of a mother in missouri it appears to show her encouraging two little girls to fight each other. no charges have been filed. a 22-year-old mississippi man is busted by his mom during an attempted robbery of a convenience store. this surveillance video shows roy mitchell pointing what looks like a gun at a clerk. then you see his mother walk over and grab his gun. she told the clerk it was only a plastic replica. police confirmed the gun was fake after arresting mitchell for attempted robbery. days before the hazing death of florida a & m drum

major champion a recommendation was made to suspend the band. in a meeting of top administrators, the campus police chief says a long term suspension would end all hazing. notes from that meeting were just released by the school. the meeting was called after allegations of band hazing were made. the campus police chief addressed the band of allegations. three days later, a student was found dead on a bus. conner's law is named after conner freed who died on a pool. a life guard frantically called 911 but was not allowed to use a defibrillators on the young boy because she wasn't trained.

>> there's a defibrillator there. >> i'm not allowed to use it. >> reporter: leopold signed a law that requires defibrillators at all public pools and trains all life guards to use them. >> there will be 175 clubs that be impacted by this legislation. there's no important public responsibility than saving lives. >> reporter: it's been such a personal mission for conner's parents who don't want any other familys to go through the trauma that they do. >> we miss him and we want him to be here. we don't want anybody to go through this ever again. >> reporter: the foundation donates donates portable defibrillators to public pools. >> defibrillators save lives lives and i would like to see this throughout the state of maryland but we're glad this passed today to save other children's lives. the county council held an

emergency public hearing on conner's law on july 2nd. a similar law was attempted on the state level but was voted down. we now know that a heart attack claimed the life of beloved actor andy griffith. coronary artery disease and hyper tension were also listed as contributing factors. griffith was laid to rest in a family cemetery in new mexico. a reporter many michigan thought she had a purr-fect live shot until this happened. >> and nicole alinada live in east town. and more details coming up. >> reporter: nicole handled her surprise visitor rather well. she said the stray cat was wandering around their location and she made the mistake of making eye contact with it. >> looks like a cat has done

as three inches of rain fell yesterday. city on south, not a drop of rain fell. 99 today, the record a long way off from that 105, the high was only 87. 75 last night, the average low is 67. the record low 51 in 1979. right now a light southerly wind in the region. not really helping things but the humidity tomorrow is going to be the big difference between today and tomorrow. humidity is going to come way back down. rather than the upper 50s and low 60s. that's going to make you feel extremely unconsideratable particularly in the afternoon. showers and storms this is pretty much the borderline between the heat and cooler air. that cooler air will get to us, later in the day on sunday. but we have some thunderstorms activities we have to deal with. probably strong storms could develop saturday night. already across the great lakes

that front is going to sink south of our region. early next week it'll be just to our south. what that will do is to give us cooler temperatures, a risk of shower and thundershower activity. pretty much every day next week. but temperatures will be held down into the low or mid-80s. the real heat gets pressed down to the south tomorrow . tomorrow is going to be an abnoxiously hot day. maybe the mid-80s in the city. some spots in the low 70s. 103, that will break the record. the record tomorrow is only 101. good chance at the airport we could get to that. the heat index about 108 to 110 tomorrow afternoon. a really tough afternoon. on sunday back in the mid-90s. good chance of thundershower activity. each day next week haven't posted it but temperatures in the mid-80s. chances of showers and

more injury news, mark is here with the wjz fan sports report. >> this guy is not getting a break. bryan roberts his body is battered, his patience is tested. he's already on the disabled list with a hip injury. that injury has been identified as a laboral tear. the news came after he sat out more than a year with concussion symptoms. making his return in early june, roberts played just 17 games before the hipinjury put
